If you’re self-employed or a landlord and your qualifying income was over £50,000 in the 2024-25 tax year, Making Tax Digital for Income Tax has applied to you since 6 April 2026. The first quarterly update was due on 7 August. The second one is due on 7 November 2026 – and it’s coming up fast.
Haven’t sent your first one yet? Not even sure if you’ve been signed up? Don’t panic. This is still the first year and it’s very fixable – but now is the time to sort it.
Quarterly updates are cumulative – each one covers everything from the start of the tax year to the end of that quarter. The deadlines are the same whether you use standard or calendar quarters.
| Quarterly update | Standard period | Calendar period | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 6 Apr – 5 Jul 2026 | 1 Apr – 30 Jun 2026 | 7 August 2026 |
| 2 | 6 Apr – 5 Oct 2026 | 1 Apr – 30 Sep 2026 | 7 November 2026 |
| 3 | 6 Apr 2026 – 5 Jan 2027 | 1 Apr – 31 Dec 2026 | 7 February 2027 |
| 4 | 6 Apr 2026 – 5 Apr 2027 | 1 Apr 2026 – 31 Mar 2027 | 7 May 2027 |
| Tax return (Final Declaration) | 31 January 2028 |
